Week Ending 23rd December
Monday 17thAnother busy start to the week with 7 going to trials at Perry Barr for a look round in preparation for the Bags Track championship and 7 runners at Swindon's afternoon meeting.
First to Perry Barr where most of our dogs handled themselves well. Gemstone Billy got a little lost on his way to recording 40.90. Express Fantasy beat Sligo Mick by 3/4 of a length in 28.88. Stanton Apollo ran the track very well as he beat Gemstone Meg by nearly 6 lengths in a fastest of the session 28.33. Droopys Harper pleased us with his 28.50 run and Hoots Mon recorded 16.26 in his solo sprint.
The dogs ran well at Swindon as we had a couple of winners and three 2nd's.
Black Beach just got the better of kennel mate Active Lark on the line to win a decent little A2 race. Der Lone Razor continued his good recent form to score in another A3.
Tuesday 18th
11 dogs were sent to trials at Swindon this morning and it was a fairly good trial session for us.
Five Alley Pub beat Portavoe Lass by nearly 6 lengths in a fastest of the session 28.66. Gemstone Jack continued his come back with another good solo trial, he stopped the clock at 28.58.
Mullingar Mer (16.48), Smoothoppa Razor (16.64), Witcome Lady (16.77), Chilli Spring (16.70), Swarez (16.61), Saleen Tompajoe (16.61), Alarming Alan (16.72) and Droopys Danneel (16.24) all went well in their sprints.
Thursday 20th
A big night for the kennel with 3 runners in the maiden derby final at Henlow and Forest Mollie in the Oaks final at Wimbledon. Although we didn't manage to win either, I was still very pleased with the efforts of our dogs. Forest Mollie showed her greenness as she moved out from the 2 box and hit the 4 dog on the run up but made up tremendous ground down the back straight and coming home to finish 3rd. This was a fantastic effort by such a novice to finish 3rd in the premier bitches event of the year and she has a huge future in front of her. She'll be kept quiet now over the winter but will be back to contest the major races of next year. She should also have a big future in the breeding paddocks after her racing career as she is from a super litter that includes many top class dogs running in Ireland.
Jolly Bullseye missed the break and got crowded on the bend but ran a very decent race to finish 2nd, only beaten 3/4 of a length. The ground at Henlow was very poor again (it was running a full second slow) and this wouldn't have been ideal for our lad that's for sure. I really like this dog and he'll be a major part of our open race team next year. Swords Messi ran a very good race on the quiet as he finished 4th. Messi looked like turning the bend handy but was struck into by Jolly and his chance was gone. This lad will soon be winning opens.
Ding Hero ran his heart out in a supporting open to the Oaks final. Ding pinged the lids from a less than ideal trap 5 and made all of the running until a couple of strides before the line where he was picked up by Bubbly Swallow. Ding will enjoy a short rest now before we have a go at the Golden Jacket with him. We should have a strong team for this next year as we hope to run Crinkil Jewel, Pony Bride, Portavoe Lass and Five Alley Pub as well.
Friday 21st
A fairly poor day at Swindon with just the one winner from today's meetings. Flag Officer won first time up since returning from injury as he just held on to win his A2.
Sunday 23rd
We were lucky enough to have 4 dogs representing Swindon today in the Bags Championship finals at Perry Barr. As it turns out we and Swindon had no luck at all in running as we didn't manage to find a winner. All of our dogs suffered plenty of crowding in running and Newcastle ran out deserving winners of the competition. We did well to make the finals though and had a good time along the way, winning 4 legs with our dogs. A lot has been made of the disappointing finish in the finals but I don't think we did too much wrong as far as team selections etc go. It might well be worth planning a little more in advance for next year though as we had 2 or 3 very nice dogs that could have made the team but couldn't due to the lack of graded races that they were given. Swords Brett and Ballyhill Power would have been very good in this comp but neither were qualified to run. Other tracks weren't afraid to keep their best dogs in A1's at short odds just to get them qualified which is something we didn't do.
On to Coventry this evening as we had 6 runners and 3 triallers.
The very useful Droopys Danneel really pleased me with her 29.58 trial win before racing. Dani hasn't done too much work at home due to the weather and hasn't been over 4 bends in months so this was a very good run. Alarming Jacks (formally Ballyhill Power) was beaten just under 3 lengths by Dani which was also a good run. Power has been struggling for runs at Swindon (3 races in over 6 weeks) so this will have been a good workout for her and also good experience. Saleen Tompajoe disappointed as he was a further 7 lengths back in 3rd.
Barnish Booth got the night off to a winning start as he pinged the lids and ran a very brave 1st bend to take up the lead, he was never in danger and won in a decent 29.40.
Glenbane Air was out of luck in his sprint race as he was clipped from behind at the bend. Portavoe Lass and Five Alley Pub both ran a little flat in their 6 bend open but it's fair to say that both needed the run and neither have shown their best form around Coventry.
Kelseys Prince was unlucky in his 4 bend race as he missed the break and got crowded on the run up and at the bend but he stuck to his task well and flew off the last bend where he was again crowded but he still wasn't beaten far and will relish the switch back to Hove that he'll have on Thursday.
The fast improving Swords Brett made sure the night ended on a high as he pinged the lids and led all the way to win his 4 bend open. Brett is one of the few dogs of ours that has managed to win first time up around there and his winning time of 29.45 was a great effort. He'll also head to Hove next week.
This was one of the best night's racing I've enjoyed in a long time, there was a really good crowd and the atmosphere was brilliant. The racing was very good with plenty of variation to the card which also included a match race which went down a storm. We'll be supporting Coventry as much as we can next year. Their increased prize money in the opens is also very good. I know we managed a couple of winners on the night but our 6 runners earned £660 which is superb. This gives our owners a fair chance of covering their kennels bills and enables us to charge a reasonable amount to cover diesel and wage costs involed with travelling. The rest of the industry really does need to follow Coventry's example.
In Other News....
We've been busy behind the scenes purchasing some lovely new stock for next year and we've managed to find some lovely additions to both the open team and graded strength. These will be offered for sale in the next week or two.
In the next post I'll be going through some of the highlights from 2012 and naming a few 'ones to watch' as well that should be worth following.
